New CANS 2.0 Training Launching July 2026!

We listened to your feedback and redesigned the CANS Assessment to be more current, practical, and effective for treatment planning, with the updated version launching in the Virtual Gateway electronic Comprehensive Assessment System (eCAS) portal on July 20, 2026. Account data from previous CANS training will be available in the new system.

What’s new about CANS 2.0?

  • Updated sections and items for clearer language, cultural relevancy, and improved usability
  • New domains added, including “developmental considerations and trauma symptoms”
  • Changes in scoring, the Strengths domain now uses Yes/No/Further Assessment Needed instead of a 0-3 scale
  • Certain questions include a skip logic where clinicians only need to complete relevant sections. For example, if substances aren’t used, that item can be skipped. This will reduce the time it takes for completion.
  • The demographic section has been updated to reflect current standards.

These changes are designed to streamline the assessment and better support individualized treatment planning. New CANS training is coming soon!

Do I need to recertify now?

  • New assessors: Yes, you must complete the current CANS training and certification before conducting assessments.
  • Already certified assessors: Your certification remains valid until the launch of CANS 2.0 in 2026.
  • Everyone: Once CANS 2.0 goes live in the eCAS system, all assessors will need to complete the updated training to be considered certified.
Registration coming soon.
